Location:  Police Headquarters, Exeter

Salary:  Starts at £38,169 rising by yearly increments to a maximum of £42,612 per annum

If you are not currently a police staff employee and are successful for this post, you will be offered a Fixed Term contract.

Are you a skilled communicator with a flair for storytelling, media relations and public engagement? Do you want to make a real difference by helping communities better understand and connect with their local police service?

We are looking for a Geographic News Officer to join our Communications Team and play a key role in promoting positive policing activity, support local engagement and deliver impactful communications across a diverse geographic area in Devon and Cornwall.

About the Role

As a Geographic News Officer, you will be responsible for producing compelling content, managing local media opportunities and ensuring key messages are communicated effectively through a range of communication channels, with particular emphasis on media outlets.

Working closely with operational policing teams, senior leaders, partners and communities, you will identify local issues and create targeted communications that inform, engage and reassure the public.

What You'll Be Doing

• Write media releases that promote the proactive work of local policing teams, instilling public confidence and reassurance.
• Identify and promote positive stories, campaigns and operational successes through the media and other communication platforms.  
• Be visible with stakeholders, and policing colleagues across the Force area.
• Set up and accompany policing teams and senior leaders at media events.
• Create engaging content for digital, social, internal and traditional comms. channels.  
• Build strong relationships with media representatives, stakeholders and partner organisations to wide communication reach.  
• Develop and deliver communication strategies that support local policing priorities and community needs.  
• Visibility – accompany media, visit policing teams across the Force area, and partners  

What We're Looking For

We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative media and communications professional who can build trusted relationships and deliver high-quality media communications in a fast-paced environment.

You will ideally have:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong media handling and stakeholder engagement skills.
• The ability to identify newsworthy stories and translate complex information into accessible and engaging messages.
• Experience in creating content for multiple communication channels.
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• A proactive, collaborative and customer-focused approach.
• Experience in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or a related field.
• Driving licence is required as travel across the Force area is necessary.
